How to Deal With Pink Eye While Travelling

With some quick and hygienic actions, pink eye doesn't have to derail a trip.

The worst nightmare of any traveller is getting sick while on the road. While some illnesses can end a trip, not every virus forces you to return home.

Pink eye is a large concern for travellers everywhere for the pain and annoyance of the virus can threaten the fun of a vacation.

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, comes in three forms: viral, bacterial, and allergic. All symptoms are the same with intense swollen and red eyes that are usually itchy and painful. Viral conjunctivitis is extremely contagious, but usually clears up within two weeks. Bacterial infections usually only affect children and allergic infections can be treated with allergy medications.

Why is the Flu More Prevalent During the Winter?

There is more than one reason for the flu's endless spread in the cold winter months.

Many viruses and diseases are a yearround problem. They can strike populations around the world at any time or season throughout the year. Diseases like hepatitis, meningitis and chickenpox can infect a person at any time during the year.

But, it’s the viruses that only spread certain times of the year that we tend to worry about the most. Whether it’s seasonal allergies, the common cold, sinus infections or influenza, some illnesses can cause panic one time of the year.

VFR’s are at a Greater Risk of Cholera than Other Travelers

Relaxing on their health preparations, VFR's are more likely to get sick when traveling abroad.

Taking a trip to see family is one of the most popular reasons to visit another country. It’s so common that there’s even an acronym for these travelers: VFR’s.

You may not recognize the acronym, but it stands for Visiting Friends and Relatives. These frequent travellers might be heading back to their native country or just spending time with relatives that live far away.

What is Herd Immunity?

Herd immunity creates breaks in the chain that could lead to disease outbreak.

You may have heard the phrase “herd immunity” when told why vaccinations are important. Not only does the method help those that are vaccinated, but can also keep diseases away from people without immunizations. The concept of herd immunity can be the best solution to prevent disease outbreaks.

But, what is it?

Herd immunity is the concept of protecting an entire community against a disease. This is done when the vast majority of the community is immune to a pathogen. As a result, the chance of a disease outbreak in the area decreases dramatically.

Passport Health Nurses Help Bring Medical Care to Suriname

Nurses from Passport Health and volunteers with Project C.U.R.E. join in Suriname.

Every day, Michelle Reesman, RN (Executive Director – Passport Health Colorado) and Linda Leisegang, RN, BSN (Travel Nurse Specialist – Passport Health Colorado) meet with Passport Health clients. The nurses provide important pre-travel medical advice, immunizations and other preventive care.

This year, they decided to use their experience and provide urgently needed medical care. They wanted to help residents of one of the smallest and poorest countries in the world: Suriname.

The opportunity was not far out of reach thanks to Newmont Mining Corporation’s commitment to support Project C.U.R.E. The project provides medical supplies, equipment and services to developing countries.

Officials Declare an End to Brazil’s Yellow Fever Outbreak

After nearly 800 confirmed cases, Brazil is without a new yellow fever cases since June.

After nine months and thousands of potential cases, Brazil’s yellow fever outbreak is over.

Brazilian officials confirmed the news on Sept. 6 after reporting no new cases of the mosquito-borne disease since June. The outbreak began in Dec. 2016, with 777 people infected with yellow fever, leading to 261 deaths.

“Today’s situation is under control,” said Brazilian Health Minister Ricardo Barros, translated from Portuguese. Barros stressed the need for Brazilian states to use campaigns and active searches to increase vaccination for yellow fever.
