What is a Coronavirus?

January 22, 2020 by Caitlin Hartwyk

The coronavirus earns its name from the crowns present on the virus.

Only a few weeks into the new year, the world already has a new viral outbreak scare.

A coronavirus, which started with almost 60 cases in Wuhan, China, was recently confirmed by officials in Washington. The virus has also been found in other countries like Japan and South Korea.

While officials in China confirmed the virus isn’t SARS, they do know it’s a coronavirus. A coronavirus can be mild, like the common cold, but this mysterious strain has already caused six deaths in China.

But, as the illness appears in the United States, many are probably asking what is a coronavirus? Could it cause an outbreak in the US? Should I be worried about catching this virus?

Study Finds How Malaria Mosquitoes Can Fight Insecticides

January 17, 2020 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Mosquitoes have become resistant to the pesticides on some mosquito nets.

In 2018 alone, there were an estimated 228 million cases of malaria, with 405,000 of those resulting in death.

At the moment there is no malaria vaccine that’s approved worldwide, although there’s been some progress in countries like Kenya. Without a vaccine to rely on, we are left with other prevention methods. Travelers must use antimalarials, insect repellent and insecticide-treated bed nets to keep the mosquitoes away.

In recent years, those bed nets have become an increasingly-popular prevention method worldwide. When combined with insecticides, they greatly reduce contact between infected mosquitoes and people.

New Flu Shot Using Nanoparticles Protects Against 6 Strains

January 16, 2020 by Caitlin Hartwyk

The use of nanoparticles in flu shot could change how we defend against the virus.

Right in the heart of the flu season, many people may still be wondering if they should get the 2019-2020 flu shot.

But, before this season even ends, researchers are looking to improve the vaccine in the coming years. A new study, conducted by Georgia State has promising new outcomes in preventing six trains of the flu in mice.

This new vaccine is a combination vaccine, using nanoparticles, and two different influenza proteins. The success of this vaccine in preventing strains in mice could lead us closer to developing a universal flu vaccine in the future.

Pakistan Suffered a Polio Setback in 2019

January 15, 2020 by Caitlin Hartwyk

A lack of accessible vaccines have helped polio return in Pakistan.

The world achieved a milestone in 2019 in the fight against polio.

With the world’s most effective polio vaccine used worldwide, hopes for eradication increased. Nigeria, once riddled by the disease, is now on the brink of eliminating polio.

And yet, even with all the optimistic news, outbreaks are still occurring throughout the world. Most recently, there has been a resurgence of polio cases in Pakistan.

Diseases and Selfies Putting African Gorillas at Risk

January 14, 2020 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Tourists trying to get close to wild gorillas are putting the animals' health in danger.

In endangered and protected wildlife areas, tourists are commonly told to take only photos and leave only footprints. But, for the gorilla populations, deadly diseases are being left behind by tourists wanting to get a great picture.

While most viruses are spread from one infected person to another, parasites can jump from animals to humans and vice versa. This common process is known as zoonosis.

And with more selfies, it’s putting African gorillas at serious risk of virus outbreaks within the gorilla populations.

Potential Zika Vaccine Passes Important Milestone

January 9, 2020 by Caitlin Hartwyk

A Zika vaccine prevented the virus in mice in recent studies.

As a disease outbreak reaches its peak, people around the world ask for any news on a vaccine. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen throughout history, those vaccines aren’t simple discoveries. Years of research and testing go into vaccine development.

Take the Zika virus for example.

The 2016 epidemic coincided perfectly with the Rio Olympics, with many worried that the virus would make its way around the world. Now, years after the height of the outbreak, we have a breakthrough in Zika prevention.

That’s because last month a potential Zika vaccine prevented the virus in mice.

China Struck With Mysterious Outbreak, Worries of SARS

January 9, 2020 by Caitlin Hartwyk

A mysterious coronavirus is behind the outbreak in China.

Wuhan, a city in China, has had an outbreak of an unknown pneumonia virus that has affected many people. After looking into the situation, Chinese officials have now discovered 59 cases of the virus, with seven patients critically ill.

In response to the mysterious outbreak, neighboring countries are taking precautions. Among others, both Hong Kong and Singapore are showing extra caution with people from Wuhan city.

Hong Kong has been careful of who they let through their borders and keeping reporters in the loop of any cases in China. Taiwan’s Center for Disease Control has also taken precautions during the outbreak in Wuhan by keeping people up to date on what’s happening.

Thanks to a vaccine that’s widely-accessible, hepatitis A has been a preventable disease for years. And yet, cases of hep A have been soaring across the United States in recent years.

Can You Have the Flu and a Cold at the Same Time?

January 3, 2020 by Caitlin Hartwyk

It may be harder than you think to have a cold and the flu at the same time.

Did you know that there are more than 200 viruses that cause the common cold? Meanwhile, only three known viruses are behind the flu?

Cold and influenza viruses are common contagious illnesses that affect millions every year. Typically, the height of flu season is from October through March, and the cold season is between August and April.

As you can see, some of these months overlap.

So, does that mean you can only be sick with one virus at a time? Or, is it really possible to get sick with both a cold and flu virus simultaneously?
