What Is In The 2017-2018 Flu Shot?

July 10, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

This year's flu vaccine has some updates that should make it stronger in preventing the virus.

Every year, the influenza vaccine is modified to best fight new strands of the virus in the next flu season. Recently, the World Health Organization announced the strains that would make up the flu vaccine in 2017-2018.

An annual vaccine for influenza is recommended for all people over the age of six months in order to prevent the illness. The flu shot is highly recommended for anyone over the age of 65. This age group is often at a higher risk of complications with the flu. Each year, the vaccine’s composition is changed to fit updated strains of the influenza virus.

How Did Sri Lanka Eradicate Malaria?

How Did Sri Lanka Eradicate Malaria?

For the whole world to eradicate malaria, maybe we need to look at the successful countries.

If they’ve accomplished it, then there might be a blueprint to getting rid of the disease in other places.

In 2016, the WHO certified that Sri Lanka was malaria-free.

While many countries have gotten rid of malaria, Sri Lanka is a surprising addition to that list. The island south of India was home to one of the world’s worst malaria epidemics in the 1935. At its peak, the disease reached 1.5 million people, killing 80,000 of the citizens. These epidemics in the late 1900s were an effect of the poor surveillance of malaria as well as civil war.

What Is A “Combination” Vaccine?

June 27, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Combination vaccines may be a viable option to unending immunizations for children.

You may have heard of “combination” vaccines. These immunizations protect against more than one disease or virus. But, what exactly are they? How do they work?

Children receive vaccines from infancy to protect them from various diseases. Many of these infections could be fatal to them due to their growing immune system.

These routine shots can be hard on children and parents. The frequent trips to the hospital and many rounds of shots can quickly create frustration with the whole process. To combat this fatigue, most doctors recommend getting more than one shot per visit.

Can Viral Outbreaks Be Predicted?

June 23, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Scientific models may help us predict viral outbreaks before they begin.

Viral outbreaks are one of the most dangerous natural disasters that humans face. Scientists use disease information to predict when these outbreaks are going to start. New technology and methods make this a greater possibility.

A breakthrough in this process occurred last year with a new partnership. The New York University Tandon School of Engineering and the Polytechnic University of Turin worked together on outbreak management. The two schools created a model to better use vaccine strategies during an outbreak. The model will show the effectiveness of disease prevention.
