Could Dogs be the Source of the Next Flu Pandemic?

July 12, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Dogs may carry a potentially deadly strain of the flu.

In the past, animals have been carriers of various new flu strains.

Birds and pigs both developed the virus in the past, eventually passing them on to humans. Once we were infected, the terms bird flu and swine flu filled news coverage. Around the world, people worried about the deadly risks brought on by these outbreaks.

A new study concluded that dogs may be the source of the next flu epidemic. Conducted by the Global Health and Emerging Pathogens Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the study showed that canine have the potential to host a new, dangerous strain.

The Ancient Romans Are Behind a Common Strain of TB

July 11, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

The Roman Empire was the source of worldwide tuberculosis spread.

Though the disease originates in Africa, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have put together a tuberculosis timeline which shows that it was largely spread by the Roman Empire.

TB is one of the world’s most prevalent and deadly diseases. According to the CDC, it affects one in four people around the globe and is the leading killer of those who are infected with HIV. In 2016, a staggering 10.4 million people were infected with the illness and 1.7 million tuberculosis-related deaths occurred.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) is the strain that many recent historical-research TB investigations focused on. According to bioRxiv, the same strain was also the subject of the 2018 study.

What’s the Growing Travel Trend Known as DNA Tourism?

July 10, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Home ancestry tests make DNA tourism a fast-growing industry.

Another reason to travel, but you may actually learn something on this trip. DNA tourism is a growing trend for travelers that want to discover their own heritage.

Families are much more likely to be spread across the globe. Maybe you’ve relocated to another state or country for work and are situated in a foreign land. There are many other reasons why people don’t know much about their heritage; perhaps your parents don’t know much about their family history and can’t offer a tree to help.

But, websites like Ancestry.com and the fast-growing 23andMe offer a scientific solution.

Could Scientists Have Found the Key to Fighting Malaria?

July 6, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

A map of the malaria parasite may be the key to future vaccines and medicine.

By breaking down malaria, we may have another breakthrough in disease prevention.

Researchers have discovered how Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) malaria parasites enter human red blood cells at the atomic level. The finding could allow scientists to create antibodies to stop various strains of the virus from infecting people.

The discovery was made possible with a Nobel Prize-winning technology called “cryo-EM”, or cryo-electron microscopy. Using a 3-D map, a team was able to visualize exactly what happens when P. vivax interacts with human red blood cells. The groundbreaking team hailed from the University of Melbourne and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Australia and from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the United States.

How Has Instagram Changed Travel?

July 4, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

With Instagram, we spend a lot more time on our phones while traveling.

Instagram made its first appearance in October 2010 and had 25,000 people sign up on the first day. Now, eight years later, it is one of the world’s most-used apps with at least 500 million users each day.

With its increasing list of appealing features, it is by far one of the fastest growing social media platforms to date.

Even with all these new features, the app is built on a pretty simple concept. Users post their own photos and videos, engaging with friends or viewers to keep people connected. Instagram is one of many apps that seems almost built for travelers with wanderlust. Influencers and ordinary people alike use Instagram to promote destinations and sites that are a must for anyone who has the travel bug.

Kentucky Has Worst Recorded Hepatitis A Outbreak in the U.S.

July 3, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Kentucky is home to the country's worst hepatitis A outbreak in recorded history.

At least seven states across the United States are dealing with hepatitis A outbreaks. Not only is Kentucky home to the worst of those epidemics, but with almost 1,000 confirmed cases, it now has the worst recorded hepatitis A outbreak in the country.

Approximately half of the 969 patients come from Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville, where the hepatitis A outbreak was first detected in the fall. Over 500 hospitalizations have occurred in the state with 300 of them being in the Jefferson County city.

So far, Kentucky’s outbreak has resulted in six deaths. Compared to other states with a hepatitis A outbreak, Kentucky’s death rate is significantly lower. Dr. Jeffrey Howard, the Commissioner of Kentucky’s Department of Public Health, told WDRB that he believes that the high hospitalization rate contributed to the low death count. Currently, the state is hospitalizing almost 59 percent of hepatitis A patients.

Keystone Virus Jumps From Mosquitoes to Humans

June 27, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

The mosquito-borne Keyston virus has been found in humans.

After a year and a half of lab work, it was announced in June 2018 that a team from the University of Florida has discovered the first known case of a person infected with the Keystone virus.

Perhaps more startling is the thought from the study’s corresponding author J. Glenn Morris, M.D., M.P.H. Morris stated that the virus has likely been common in people in the Southeast for some time and we just lacked a way to test for it.

What is a Bloodless Malaria Test?

June 23, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

A new bloodless malaria test could be a game-changer in treating the disease.

Malaria infected approximately 216 million people worldwide in 2016, according to the WHO. That same year, Uganda saw between 70,000 and 100,000 cases of the mosquito-borne disease. Currently, the only way to detect malaria is through a blood test.

At least, until a recent breakthrough from someone who has firsthand experience with those many cases in Uganda.

So, who is the person to invent such a non-invasive device?
