What’s Different in the New Typhoid Vaccine?

The vaccine may solve problems with anti-bacterial resistance and doses for infants.

Typhoid fever, once feared throughout the world, saw its number of cases dwindle. Awareness and improved medicine helped reduce the food and water-borne disease.

Stemming from a lack of sanitation, the disease was even almost eradicated in many parts of the world that long struggled with it.

For decades, progress to fight typhoid came in the form of vaccines, improved hygiene and sanitation. With work in industrial nations, death tolls from typhoid leveled off to a manageable extent.

The advent of social media and selfies has taken an important role in society.

Electronic media has made it easy for people to post pictures, text messages, tweets and selfies to the internet in real time. After climbing to the top of the Himalayas, you probably want to show off the accomplishment, right?

It’s always interesting and a lot of fun to post on Snapchat or Instagram to show your friends and family. But, you still need to remember that different types of pictures and places are appropriate, while others aren’t.

Is It the Flu or a Sinus Infection?

With similar symptoms, it can often be a nightmare to tell if you have the flu or sinus infection.

The cold, winter months are inevitably upon us.

Unfortunately, this means the onset of the cold and flu season. Some people are also prone to sinus infections during the wintertime. Winter proves to be the premier time for individuals to get sick more easily. This can be chalked up to many reasons, like the cold weather or close quarters indoors to avoid that weather.

Approximately 5-20 percent of the United States’ population gets sick with the flu virus every year, while millions of others in the country are diagnosed with sinus infections.

Prevalent for decades, tuberculosis is now the world's deadliest disease.

There was a time when certain diseases and viruses had a firm grip on society.

What Happens When You Get Rabies?

Attempting to feed stray animals is one of the most common ways to get rabies.

Most people have an understandable fear of contracting rabies. This doesn’t mean all the ideas and anxiety toward rabies is founded. In fact, there are many misconceptions about what the virus actually is.

Rabies is a virus that’s transmitted from animals to humans through the the genus Lyssavirus, according to the World Health Organization.

There is a myth that rabies is usually transferred through rodents, but according to the WHO, 95 percent of deaths transfer via dogs.

The History of Influenza and the Flu Vaccine

Scientists needed many breakthroughs before creating the long-needed flu vaccine.

Influenza dates back approximately 2,400 years.

First mentions of the virus stretch to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates. He was first person to accurately describe the virus’s symptoms, which mirrored any other respiratory infection.

As the virus spread, there was a need to name the illness.

Climate Change Linked to Global Cholera Outbreaks

Natural disasters are increasing with climate change, as is cholera's spread.

Global warming isn’t just affecting our environment and landscape, but also could influence the spread of disease.

A study from the American Clinical and Climatological Association (ACCA) shows that there is a relationship between climate change and the spread of cholera.

The study shows that as natural disasters and temperatures increase, so do cholera cases. The deadly disease may spread worldwide along with global warming.

Listeriosis and the Outbreak in South Africa

An outbreak of the food-borne disease has created increased health risks in South Africa.

Earlier this month, South Africa confirmed that it is experiencing an outbreak of listeriosis. So far, 36 people have died from the infection, with over 500 confirmed cases.

But what is listeriosis?

Listeriosis is an old infection that doctors have studied for decades. Within recent years, it has become more prevalent in animals and humans within the past 60 years.

How to Beat Jet Lag After a Long Flight

Some tips can keep jet lag from derailing your trip.

Jet lag is one of the most frequent complaints of travelers.

People anxiously await the holiday in another country, and upon their arrival, feel exhausted. The plans that they made previously made sometimes have to change, at least temporarily.

Jet lag happens when people travel east to west, or vice versa, and span a few time zones. This shift in time throws their system off and out of sync. Some symptoms of jet lag are headaches, insomnia, irritability and imbalance problems because of the changes in the inner ear. So, how does a person beat these symptoms so they can enjoy their vacation?
