Scarlet Fever is Coming Back in England and Asia

December 11, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Many diseases come and go in waves, but the current scarlet fever outbreak defies this pattern.

As recent reports suggest, scarlet fever isn’t just a disease for the history books. In fact, the number of scarlet fever cases has been rapidly increasing over the past few years in England and Asia.

According to a recent study by the National Infection Service and Public Health England, the trend in England started in 2014. Scarlet fever cases increased at a large scale throughout the country in the last few years.

The rate of scarlet fever has increased three times the average in the last four years. This marks the highest cases of scarlet fever in England in over 50 years. There are currently an estimated 33 cases per every 100,000 people, according to the study.

Study Shows That Cancer Survivors Often Lack HPV Vaccine

December 8, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Less than a quarter of cancer survivors receive the HPV vaccine.

Nobody wishes to battle cancer at a young age.

The disease can take a toll on both the child and their family. These effects can only make it so much more important for doctors and families to do everything to prevent its return.

But, after surviving cancer there are still other risks that creep up in later years. According to a recent study, cancer survivors are contracting human papillomavirus (HPV) at a much higher rate. Only 24 percent of survivors are receiving the HPV vaccine, according to the joint study by St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

WHO Plans to Eradicate Hepatitis by 2030

December 7, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

In the midst of many outbreaks, the WHO wants to eliminate hepatitis by 2030.

In 2016, 194 countries took on the fight to end hepatitis by 2030.

If it seems like an overwhelming goal, that’s because it is. Hepatitis affects over 325 million people worldwide and causes more than 1.3 million deaths each year, according to the World Health Organization.

But, the world is actually heading in a positive direction to fight the disease.

Food for Travel: Eastern Asia

December 6, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Famous around the world, the food of Eastern Asia is best in its home region.

Whichever country you visit in Eastern Asia, you’re likely to come across the same ingredients.

The dish will likely take advantage of local fish, pork or chicken, seasoned with ginger or cilantro. Rice or wheat noodles will likely complement the protein, cooked with soy, fish or chili sauce. Onions, mushrooms or cabbage will often mix well to finish the dish with some vegetable.

But, just because the ingredients are similar, doesn’t mean your palate will get bored in the region. Each Eastern Asian country puts their own spin on these ingredients. The spice levels might change or how the protein is cooked, there’s no lack of variety in food from this region.

Here are the premier dishes in some of Eastern Asia’s most-visited countries:

What Makes Bottled Water Safe to Drink?

December 5, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Regulations make bottled water the most reliable source for safe drinking.

If you’ve ever visited a country with questionable tap water, you’re likely familiar with all the tips to avoid getting sick.

Don’t drink from the tap, avoid ice, and only stick to bottled water.

The Dangers of Falling Ill Abroad

December 1, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

A lack of preparation can leave foreign travelers in trouble if they get sick.

Two young women were recently found dead while vacationing in Cambodia.

Natalie Seymour, 22, and Abbey Amisola, 27, were staying in a local hostel in the city of Kampot.

Seymour mentioned to her mother that both she and Amisola were not feeling well. She described symptoms of dizziness, headaches and diarrhea to her mother during one of their daily texts. Seymour’s mother told The Daily Mail that her daughter was good at keeping her up to date with their plans.

Which Kind of Transportation Should I Use While Abroad?

November 30, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

There's no lack of options with transportation when abroad.

With so many options in the world today, thanks to ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft, transportation while traveling can be much easier than it used to be.

There is no longer a need to rely on the word of locals or maps. An app or navigation system can take care of many transportation worries.

But, with all these options it can also be hard to tell which is the best for you. The answer to that question can largely depend upon where you’re traveling; for example, if you’re in a rural setting, public transportation may not be an option at all. This can narrow down your choices, but it still remains a tricky choice for travelers when they are planning trips abroad.

What Viruses Get Worse During a Second Infection?

November 29, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Not every illness creates a natural immunity, with some getting worse the second time.

Everyone is familiar with the immunity created for many illnesses. Viruses like smallpox and chickenpox build an immunity with antibodies after a first infection.

But what about diseases that actually come back worse the second time?

Research on dengue fever, published in 2017, has people considering the idea with more evidence than before.

What is Marburg Virus?

November 28, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Spread via bats, Marburg is considered a cousin to Ebola.

The Marburg virus is relatively new on the scene.

It was discovered in 1967 and named after one of the leading cities where the illness broke out, Marburg, Germany. There was a simultaneous epidemic in Frankfurt, Germany, as well as in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, which is modern-day Serbia.

In its early years, the virus was commonly called the Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever. While Marburg may be new to many, the world is already familiar with its cousin virus, Ebola.

The Difference Between Two and Three-Dose HPV Vaccines

November 22, 2017 by Caitlin Hartwyk

After studies that took years, we now know which HPV vaccine is needed for each age group.

Infecting hundreds of millions across the globe, HPV is the world’s most common sexually transmitted disease. In the United States alone, human papillomavirus infects 14 million new people every year.

While the numbers are alarming, HPV is usually symptomless. It’s the long-term effects of this disease that can create life-threatening issues.

Years of untreated HPV can change the cells in a woman’s cervix, leading to cervical cancer. While cervical cancer is still a rare development from HPV, 70 percent of the cancer cases can be traced to the disease.
