How to Tell If You Have Walking Pneumonia

February 5, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Walking pneumonia will allow you to keep going, making it harder to diagnose.

We’re all familiar with the sense of dread that comes when you realize you’re getting a case of the winter sniffles – often cold or flu. Although, it’s thought that over two million Americans actually deal with walking pneumonia each year, and many may not even realize it.

What is Walking Pneumonia?

If you’ve never heard of walking pneumonia, you’re not alone. The disease goes unheard of for many, despite affecting 2 million people in the United States every year.

Worm Bacteria Could Be A Mosquito Repellant Better Than DEET

February 2, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

DEET may be losing its effectiveness, but worm bacteria could be a better replacement.

Do you know what the active ingredient is in many insect repellants? If you said, “DEET” you’re correct.

DEET is a chemical ingredient that has been used since the 1940s as the active ingredient in over 500 brands of insect repellants. Although, in recent years consumers have become educated about chemicals used in household and personal products. Many have expressed concerns about applying these chemicals to children’s sensitive skin.

As a result, people are looking for an alternative, especially a plant-based option. One other increasing factor is that DEET is becoming less effective in deterring mosquitoes. These pesky insects are now developing a resistance to the synthetic ingredient.

Study Predicts Next Epidemic From South America or SE Asia

January 30, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Researchers use a disease roadmap to predict outbreaks.

Despite the many mosquito-borne outbreaks worldwide, researchers aren’t guessing with these diseases.

Scientists are able to take data and create roadmaps for predicted mosquito-borne diseases. They can find which diseases pose a risk in different regions of the world. The key for this data is local wildlife species and which ones are most likely to host flaviviruses.

What Are These Roadmaps?

The CDC describes flaviviradae as a group of connected, RNA viruses with a single strand. They add that, “members of this family that belong to a single genus, Flavivirus, cause widespread morbidity and mortality throughout the world.” Some of these mosquito-transmitted viruses include yellow fever, dengue fever, West Nile, and the Zika virus.

The FDA Approves A Booster Shot for the Tdap Vaccine

January 29, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

An approved Tdap booster shot could improve immunity against 3 diseases.

Back in the 1800s some of the main epidemics that swept through the United States, as well as the rest of the world, were diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis.

Diphtheria is a highly contagious illness that is caused by bacteria. It attacks the mucous membranes in the nasal passages and produces a thick whitish-grey substance in the back of your throat. A breakthrough for diphtheria came in 1926 in the form of a vaccine.

Tetanus, also known as “lockjaw,” is a bacterial infection that affects the central nervous system. The disease causes your muscles to tense up and become stiff, thus rendering you immobile. Muscle stiffness usually affected the neck and jaw area, leading to the widely-used nickname. In the 1890s, Emil von Behring developed the first antitoxin for tetanus. Von Behring’s medication paved the way for the inoculation discovered about 35 years later.

How is One Mosquito-Borne Virus Contained to Australia?

January 25, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Dead end hosts like kangaroos can keep Ross River virus from spreading.

The most common mosquito-borne virus in Australia is the Ross River Virus Disease (RRVD). Although there are 4,000 cases of RRVD every single year in Australia, there are no cases in the rest of the world.

This begs the question: how is this virus contained to just Australia?

Ross River Virus Disease is a mosquito-borne virus that is the most common mosquito-borne virus in Australia. According to the CDC, 55-75 percent of people with RRVD don’t experience any symptoms.

Estimated 7 Million People Infected With Flu This Season

January 23, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Before February 6-7 million people have in the U.S. have come down with the flu.

The flu season may have started around October, but we are right in the middle of its peak. That peak normally comes between December and February, with many more cases during those months.

With the season well underway, we are also getting a better idea of this year’s flu impact across the country. Typically reports are published at the end of the flu season, but the CDC is releasing weekly records for the public. Reviewing this information allows readers the chance to witness the impact the flu has on the country as it is happening.

According to current estimates from federal health officials, the virus has already affected millions in the United States. About 6-7 million, in fact.

Can You Have Tuberculosis Without A Cough?

January 22, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

TB can infect parts of the body besides the chest, not causing that textbook cough.

Although tuberculosis is most well-known for causing a distinctive cough, there are other types of tuberculosis in which individuals don’t experience the symptom at all.

Two types of the disease don’t produce a cough: Bone and joint TB and latent TB.

This is important information to know and recognize because if TB isn’t identified early-on it can become more advanced and even cause death.

Chinese Government Making Changes to Hopefully Reduce Rabies

January 18, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Dog owners have to make some big changes thanks to a new policy in China to limit rabies.

A city in eastern China recently enacted a policy regarding stray dogs that may have a tremendous influence on the relatively high rabies rate for the region. Unfortunately, the new policy already earned serious criticism from locals. The enforcement methods used for the changes are highly concerning to many dog owners.

Hangzhou authorities announced in mid-November 2018 that new rules would go in effect for dog ownership.

The news came shortly after the city banned 34 breeds of canines, which also caused fear and frustration.

Can the Flu Shot Reduce Risks of Heart Failure?

January 17, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Besides defending against the virus, the flu shot may also reduce risk of heart failure.

Every year it’s recommended that all individuals receive the influenza vaccination. The flu shot offers protection against specific strains of that season’s virus.

But, along with flu prevention, the vaccine may improve health in other areas. Recent studies have shown that this vaccine is especially important to individuals with a history of heart problems.

These heart problems could include heart failure, heart disease, or even a stroke.

Virginia Woman Dies from Rabies After Yoga Retreat in India

January 16, 2019 by Caitlin Hartwyk

After petting a stray dog in India, a Virginia woman died from rabies.

In the early 1900s, rabies killed over 100 people each year. Now, the CDC states that only one to three deaths occur annually here in the United States.

Today, it’s mandatory that all dogs in the U.S., including household pets and strays, receive the rabies vaccine. Animal Control may not administer the vaccine, but the shelters that accept the strays are required to give the shot upon intake. Many expect that step to virtually eradicate rabies across the country.

In January 2017, a woman from Virginia attended a Yoga Retreat in Rishikesh, India, as noted by the CDC. Unbeknownst to her, she contracted rabies when a stray puppy bit her. Instead of seeking medical attention for the bite, she rinsed the wound with water. The report didn’t say when the woman was bitten, but when she returned home a few months later, she began experiencing some symptoms. These included flu-like symptoms, pain, and tingling in her right arm, and other signs mimicking a panic attack.
