What is the New Superbug Mycoplasma Genitalium?

September 6, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

Mgen is both common and resistant to bacteria.

Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen or MG) is a relatively new sexually transmitted disease but it’s already a bigger problem than you might think. The disease could already be present in one in every 100 adults and it may very well become a superbug due to its antimicrobial resistance.

Even if you haven’t heard of it, the STI is surprisingly common. Mgen infects roughly one to two percent of people in the United States and in Australia, as well as one percent of people in the United Kingdom.

As Lifehacker AU notes, countless people know of gonorrhea and not Mgen, yet Mgen infects more than twice as many people as gonorrhea.

This news has many questioning what the illness is and how it’s spread.

August 24, 2018 by Caitlin Hartwyk

A second Ebola wave in the DRC is prompting the use of new vaccines.

Ebola is not a new virus to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The DRC has even dealt with the deadly virus in 2018 already, thanks to an outbreak that started in May. Just a few weeks after that set of cases ended, it appears Ebola is back in DRC.

The World Health Organization declared a new Ebola outbreak in the beginning of August. The new set of cases started 46 confirmed cases with another 27 probable cases, causing 16 deaths. As of Aug. 21, those numbers ballooned to 76 confirmed cases and 61 deaths due to the virus.
